Without both national and city or council targets which are time bound, measurable and stretching it will be almost impossible to build and maintain momentum, accountability or realise a long term vision. We will revert to short term goals and conjecture based on election cycles. Adapting a targeted, phased approach will distinguish this holistic greening strategy from the many other locally led initiatives ongoing across the country. These targets must be ambitious and acted upon urgently to ensure our urban environs thrive in a future when we will face more extreme weather events.

These targets should emulate those set by similarly developed, wealthy nations and set an example for other nations to follow. Some examples are summarised below. Not only are these ambitious targets but plans and resources are already being mobilised to achieve them.

  • Paris: 50% of the city to be covered by planted areas by 2030.

  • Milan: 3 million trees to be planted in the city and surrounding areas by 2030.

  • Singapore: Add over 130 ha of new parks, and enhance around 170 ha of existing parks with more lush vegetation by end-2026.

  • Denmark: Planting 3,400 hectares of new forest – both stateowned and private forest with public funding
