Description
In urban and suburban planning, nature is often considered as an afterthought, a "nice to have", and, very often, a hindrance.
A notable exception to this is Archers Wood in Farrankelly, Delgany where citizen scientist and professional artist Eoin Llewellyn has collaborated with Cairn Homes, most notably their landscaping and sustainability team, for the past 4 years to ensure that this major new housing estate was developed in a way which safeguards and enhances biodiversity.
On Sunday 25th August, from 11am-12.30pm, the Urban Wilderness team, led by Eoin, will walk Archers Wood, examining the many wildflower meadows, native woodlands, and breathtaking wetlands area which is teeming with life at this time of year. We'll identify the many and varied species of bees, birds, butterflies and native flora that call this wonderful sanctuary home. We'll also discuss the vital importance of protecting the riparian zones in our urban environments, as these provide vital corridors and refuge for wildlife. Lastly, we will confront the urgency required in acting now to protect our urban environs against increasingly extreme weather events through nature-based solutions.
If you are interested in transforming your own community into a more vibrant and nature friendly space, and understanding the practical mechanics involved in this, we would really encourage you to come along to this important event.
We will meet at the tennis court (next to the playground and basketball courts) in Archers Wood, Delgany at 11am.
For a short video detailing the collaborative approach taken and some of the interesting plant species on show in the Farrankelly wetlands click on the link below. This was recorded after a recent event held with Cairns and local residents.
This event is free to all. Donations optional.

7.30pm, 18 August 2024: Kindlestown Woods, Delgany, Co. Wicklow.
The Urban Wilderness team invites you to reconnect with nature in an evening of learning, discussion and tranquillity at Kindlestown Woods, Delgany, Co Wicklow.
We are a group of like-minded individuals with a mission to protect, restore, and expand wild nature, particularly in those areas that are close to or within population centres. We believe that everyone has a right to enjoy nature and that it should be possible to do so close to home.
At 7.30pm on 18th August 2024 we will explore Kindlestown Woods, highlighting selected pockets of woodland that remain in a healthy condition and identifying interesting trees, plants, wildflowers, grasses, insects and bird species (and possibly find evidence of mammals in the area too). We will identify invasive species in the woodlands which, if left unmanaged, will over time dominate the landscape, causing further deterioration to delicate ecosystems. As this is National Heritage Week and the location of a 3,000-year-old Bronze Age hillfort, we will discuss the storied history of this site and the importance of Kindlestown or ‘Cuala-gad’, to the Royal Kingdom of Fera Cuala. You can find a one page sketch detailing the history here.
Our choice of date coincides with a full moon so if there are clear skies we will be able to enjoy the magical, panoramic views from the top of the hill under the light of the moon.
The event is free to all. Donations optional.
